Julyen Hamilton & workshop participants
A gaze behind the scenes
Within this year's tanz_house festival, we have the pleasure to offer a workshop to professional dancers and musicians lead by the choreographer, poet, teacher and musician Julyen Hamilton. His teaching investigates deeply the creative act and the technique needed to accompany and facilitate it. His work observes how things are made, how they function and how knowledge, experience and intuition can be used to create work live with the audience.
During three days of workshop the participants will explore principals of instant composition. On the last workshop day visitors will have the unique opportunity to witness the results of this process. We will see little pieces, which are composed right in front of our eyes, we hear feedback by Julyen and the other participants taking a peek behind the scenes, to see how dance happens, how it communicates and what it is that sustains movement in order to become a composition.

Julyen Hamilton has been making and performing dances for 40 years throughout the world. Born and brought up in England he trained in London in the 1970's, a time of radical experimentation. He has been an exponent of innovative performance since that time. His work is mostly improvised: he composes dance works instantly as well as the texts which often accompany them. His work with text is unique: It fuses naturally his long-term writing practice with his refined skills in dancing. Since the 80's he has performed constantly in close collaboration with many quality musicians from all over Europe. Since 2009 he has developed a series of pieces as director of his company ALLEN'S LINE.
